Public Consultation on Payphones

BT is undertaking a formal consultation to consider the future of some of its public payphones which are used rarely, if at all. The affected public payphones for Warminster which have been earmarked for removal are:
• Victoria Road
• Woodcock Road
• Boreham Road/Woodcock Road junction
• Portway Lane
• Thornhill Road
• Boreham Road
Councillors discussed this issue at Full Council on 21st November and were concerned that the low usage of some of these phones could be due to them being out of order for large periods of time rather than there being no demand. They asked the Town Clerk to contact BT for an engineer’s report for the payphones in question and for the issue to be referred to the Town Development Committee on 5th December for further discussion.
In the meantime the Council is eager to hear from any members of the public who use the payphones and would be disadvantaged by their removal, or those who have attempted to use any of the above payphones but have found them out of order. It would like to establish whether there is a demand for the service in these areas before responding to BT’s consultation which closes in January.
