Warminster Town Council has been working with Sanjay Nagarajan, Lecturer, Department of Chemical Engineering and Deputy Director of the Research Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Bath, to test a novel water treatment unit to treat the blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in the Lake Pleasure Grounds (Weymouth Street, Warminster, BA12 9NP).
Sanjay Nagarajan, said: “We have installed a reactor that creates bubbles from water without adding chemicals. We are testing whether those bubbles, as they implode, can break down microalgae and reduce algal bloom over time.”
Testing has taken place in both very hot conditions on the first day and cooler, more typical weather since then.

Sanjay also thanked Kevin Whithorn, Estates Manager and the rest of the Lake Pleasure Grounds team who supported him during the week long testing and sampling.
These initial tests were possible due to the University of Bath’s Institute for Sustainability and Climate Change (ISCC) Innovation Pot funding support.
Sanjay added: “We hope this data will support research grant applications. If successful, the funding could help us build a larger system to clean up the lake.”
Warminster Town Council will continue to work with other agencies to re-open the lake as soon as safe to do so.
