At the Parks and Estates Committee meeting on Tuesday 30th of May, a proposal was approved concerning the creation of a ‘Walking Football’ club.
The proposal was drafted by a member of the public, Nick Pitcher, and was approved by the Committee. Mr. Pitcher has said: ‘I am really looking forward to organising this regularly. Previously the nearest sessions have been as far as Bristol, and I think the local community would really enjoy having something so near. It will also be good to make full use of the newly refurbished MUGA. I am excited to get it up and running as soon as possible. I would also finally like to thank the Councillors for approving this proposal.’
Ideally, the games would be five-a-side and be aimed at retired individuals in the local community. The mapped-out timeframe and fixtures would be between March and September on Wednesday mornings, 10:00-11:00, and Wednesday evenings, 18:00-19:00.
Mr. Pitcher also stated he would provide a football, sign, bibs and would draft up rules for the game to publish and make accessible for anyone interested in attending. Councillor Jack Jones, the Vice Chair of the Parks and Estates Committee has generously said he will contribute some bibs and equipment for this venture.
This is a wonderful community-minded opportunity that manages to both make full use of the new Multi Use Games Area and create a budding sporting community in the local area. Members of the Parks and Estates Committee resolved to approve the request and intend to go ahead with it as soon as possible. Once further details of this endeavour are finalised and the appropriate equipment is sourced, further details will be released.
