Warminster Town Council: Delivering a brighter, greener future for all

Warminster Town Council requests coach parking spaces to drive further tourism into town

13 June 2024

Warminster Town Council has written to Wiltshire Council to request coach parking facilities. The Town Development Committee met to discuss coach parking bays and members resolved to ask for the provision of coach parking bays in Warminster’s Central Car Park and/or other suitable locations with appropriate signage from the A36.

Warminster currently has a drop-off point for passengers; however, there are no coach bays which would allow the driver to park the coach and have a break from driving, and enable-potential tourists to explore Warminster.

It is hoped space could be found for parking bays either in Central Car Park or by using some of the taxi rank spaces in Station Road. There may be other options such as Western Car Park.

James Sullivan-Tailyour (pictured above), proprietor of The Old Bell, Warminster, approached the council as he believes the request would be more compelling – if from the town council. He said:

Having attended a number of coach operator shows over the last two years I am confident that given a little support we can increase the number of coaches stopping in Warminster and bringing custom to the businesses of the town.

I have also been speaking with the Chair of the Warminster Business Network and understand he is also working on some form of parking strategy review in conjunction with the council.

We have had initial contact with coach companies who seem very supportive of the idea and recognise Warminster’s excellent location for people visiting such places as Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Longleat and Center Parcs.

It is also a destination in its own right with a wide range of shops and businesses and other attractions such as the Lake Pleasure Grounds.”

Wiltshire Council has acknowledged the letter from Warminster Town Council and is currently drafting a new parking strategy in conjunction with the upcoming local Transport Plan 4.

Wiltshire Council has said part of that strategy will include coach provision and a review of existing and proposed sites. They will continue to engage with Warminster Town Council.
