Did you know that this week is National Apprenticeship Week? We caught up with our apprentice Will Addecott who’s studying Horticulture Level 2 to see how he’s progressing.
Name: Will Addecott
What apprenticeship are you studying?
Horticulture Level 2
What do you do on a typical day?
We start with litter picking the sites, blowing off the paths and cleaning the toilets which normally takes about 30 minutes.
Then it’s onto the main task for the day. This can be anything from shrub work and grass cutting to bench installations or painting. It’s always important to leave the site tidy once we finish.
How has the apprenticeship helped you?
I have developed new horticultural skills which I will be able to use for the rest of my career.
I have worked as part of a team for the first time, and I have learnt how to be a valued team member.
I have also improved my customer service skills when dealing with members of the public. How to deal with unhappy or confrontational people.
Lastly, I think my problem-solving skills have improved immensely.
Which part of your apprenticeship do you enjoy the most?
The variety of the work.
Being outside in the fresh air learning new skills.
Stuart Legg, Parks and Estate Manager said, “Will has been with us for 7 months it has been great to watch him grow and develop his skills. We are committed to developing our staff and the apprenticeship has been a very useful positive experience”.
