Warminster Town Council is seeking designs for gateway features to welcome people to the Lake Pleasure Grounds, the towns award winning park.
For many years the council has had the ambition to improve the visibility and attractiveness of the entrances to the Lake Pleasure Grounds.
Members resolved to seek tenders to get prices for designs of enhanced entrances to the two main access points on Weymouth Street.
Councillors deliberately left the remit vague to encourage as many ideas as possible to come forward. Councillors said they would welcome ideas and comments from the public and it was likely that the final choice of design would be made by the public.
Councillor Stephen Kirkwood, Chairman of the Parks and Estate Committee said:
“We have a wonderful park that brings joy to thousands of people, but many people, particularly visitors to the town can miss the entrance and not even realise we have a park at all. To be honest, the road into the park can easily be mistaken for a private drive and the entrance slightly further up Weymouth Street where steps lead down into the park does not obviously look like a path to the splashpad and other facilities.“
Councillor Kirkwood added
“This is an exciting time for our park. We have just celebrated 100 years of this marvellous facility and all the recent investment, from the Skatepark to Tennis courts. The Council is working on a lottery bid that would bring extra toilets, a revamped café/kiosk and an expansion of the boat house so the top floor can be hired out and used for educational and community purposes. The lottery bid would also fund much needed improvements to the sides of the lake and biodiversity as well as the provision of better signage.”
Stephen concluded,
“With its own funds, the council is working on plans for a pump track and resurfacing some of the paths. I hope people channel their love for the park into positive views about how we can improve the entrances so more people can share the enjoyment.”
