Warminster Town Council is looking for people who are willing to volunteer to be flood wardens. Flood wardens are a valuable resource in the fight against flooding in Warminster. Their key responsibilities entail:
- Keeping an eye on watercourses.
- Use their own local knowledge to recognise and report flood risks.
- Report blocked drains.
- Report potential flooding to others in the area they cover.
- Provide emergency services with important information.
The role of a flood warden is primarily to observe and report. They do not place themselves in any danger, take responsibility for moving or protecting anyone’s property or clearing ditches, drains and streams.
Flood wardens look after small area at risk of flooding. It could be just the street they live in, or a few streets nearby.
The Town Council provides full training for volunteers and provide all equipment necessary to fulfil the role.
During severe rain, flooding can occur at a number of locations at the same time, therefore flood wardens are essential because they can contact the authorities with the most up to date information which might otherwise go unrecorded.
Even a photo of flooding can be used to understand what is happening in different areas and decided what preventative action can be taken.
At present, there is an especial need for a warden to cover the Town Centre (one required) and the Smallbrook Meadows area.
