Ian Caskie ~ SS Great Britain: from Launch to Re-Launch
Brunel’s SS Great Britain was the first ocean-going steam ship with an iron hull and driven by propeller. Launched in 1843, it transformed ship-building and sea-travel, but was not a commercial success and ended up as a freight ship in the Falklands. Finally salvaged and returned to Bristol in 1970 to be restored into an internationally renowned award-winning tourist attraction.
