Warminster Town Council are seeking to recruit a Town Crier.
In days gone by, the town crier made public announcements in the streets as many people could not read or write. They carry a handbell to attract people’s attention, as they shout the words “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” before making their announcements. The word “Oyez” means “hear ye,” which is a call for silence and attention to listen to the announcements from the crier, who were usually elaborately dressed in decorative and colourful clothing.
Duties today the Town Crier may be asked to perform: –
- Announce the Mayor or Deputy Mayor
- Make a Town or Event Announcement or Declaration
- Pose for photographs with the public /tourists
- Attend events such as Christmas Light switch on, Remembrance Day parade, Civic Services, Spring in the Park
Support is available from the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers that represent official town criers all over the world who meet to compete in friendly competition and strive to help each other be the best.
This is an unpaid position (agreed expenses can be claimed). You will be expected to attend pre-arranged events and follow simple Council guidelines and protocols.
A Town Crier costume (except shoes) will be provided for use at events.
The position is open to anyone 18 years and over.

Closing date for applications is noon Friday 2nd September 2022 and selection will take place on the morning of Saturday the 10th September 2022 at the Band Stand in the Lake Pleasure Ground where you will be given cry to read out.
